What evidence-based factors should men and women consider prior to reproduction?
This section covers caffeine and miscarriage risks; antioxidants and sperm quality; the importance of micronutrients (especially the B vitamins) for maintaining chromosomal stability; and lifestyle choices that bolster fertility. You’ll also learn about Dr. Rhonda Patrick’s pre-pregnancy routine, which included having a healthy body weight, adequate micronutrient status, and exercising regularly.
The Role of Caffeine in Miscarriages and Male Fertility
Caffeine's effects on miscarriages and sperm quality are both dose and frequency dependent, meaning that larger amounts or frequent consumption can have a more significant negative impact. High doses of caffeine, such as those found in multiple cups of coffee or black tea, have been associated with an increased risk of miscarriage and reduced sperm quality. These effects are particularly concerning during conception and early pregnancy.
For individuals trying to conceive, it is recommended to cut out or significantly reduce caffeine intake to avoid potential complications. On the other hand, smaller amounts of caffeine found in products like CocoaVia or green tea are much less concerning, as they contain significantly lower doses. Moderation is key, and avoiding high levels of caffeine may be beneficial for fertility outcomes for both men and women.
